Building A Climate Positive Company
Being a sustainable furniture company is a great start. But we see ourselves going further to generate a positive impact on the environment by restoring more to nature than we take.
We aim to become the world's first climate positive furniture company.
Sounds like a great idea, right? No one has done it yet because it’s, admittedly, hard to do. But this is what we wanted even before we turned on the band saw to cut our first prototype. We designed it into our products and our entire company.
It’s an ongoing process to achieve our climate positive goals. Here’s what we’re doing right now:
1. Sustainable and Healthy Materials
Material selection is critical to a furniture company's climate+ credentials. All of our wood comes from sustainably managed, FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified forests - the world's most rigorous certification for sustainable forestry.
Our goal is to always source 100% FSC certified wood. View our Responsible Wood Sourcing Policy.
We also choose materials and food-grade finishes that avoid toxins. Our Appleply hardwood plywood is a premium product that exceeds the air quality standards set by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) and the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED program.
2. Compostable, Recycled Packaging
Our products ship in corrugated cardboard, compostable boxes made of 40%-60% recycled content. At that level of recycled content, our packaging still maintains its strength and integrity to ensure your furniture arrives in perfect condition.
We're striving for 100% recycled content for all packaging, and we're researching options that would satisfy our box stress tests. More to come.
3. Space-Efficient Shipping
We ship our flat-pack furniture in boxes nearly 80% smaller than they would be if the items arrived pre-assembled. The result is more fuel-efficient shipping and fewer carbon emissions. More good news: our furniture assembles and dis-assembles easily using innovative, integrated locking mechanisms.
4. Local, U.S. Manufacturing
We produce and ship our furniture directly to you from our factory outside Asheville, North Carolina. Keeping our manufacturing in the U.S. shrinks the carbon footprint of our products. We minimize the miles that parts and materials travel to reach our factory and the miles our finished products travel to reach you.
We're also proud to support local jobs and play a role in upliting the local economy of this beautiful part of Appalachia.

5. Carbon Neutral Orders
Where we can't yet further minimize our environmental footprint, we purchase carbon offsets that support ethically and scientifically vetted projects in renewable energy, forest restoration, and energy efficiency.
EVERY ORDER BECOMES CARBON NEUTRAL AT CHECKOUT
In fact, through our partnership with EcoCart we make sure that every order on Simbly.com is carbon neutral. When customers purchase the furniture in their shopping cart, we automatically calculate and offset the carbon footprint connected to manufacturing and shipping those products.
6. Plant One Tree For Every Product We Sell
Trees are climate warriors and our furniture depends on them, so we take things a step further to offset the climate impact of our products. To help replenish forests, we plant one tree for every product we sell through our partnership with the nonprofit organization One Tree Planted.
7. Donating 1% of Sales to Environmental Causes
We are a proud member of 1% For The Planet, an alliance of companies committed to supporting nonprofit organizations in their work to preserve and restore the natural environment. We donate 1% of all Simbly revenue to such worthy causes.
8. Advancing Our Industry
Simbly is also member of the Sustainable Furnishings Council, a coalition of manufacturers, retailers and designers dedicated to raising awareness and expanding the adoption of environmentally sustainable practices across the home furnishings industry.
